Collagen Myths Debunked: Does Hydrolysed Collagen Really Have a Type?

You've probably seen collagen supplements labelled as Type I, Type II or Type III collagen.  It sounds important, but when it comes to hydrolysed collagen, it's actually a common misconception. 

Here's why.  Type I, II and III describe the way collagen naturally exists in the body. In its original form, collagen is a large protein with a unique triple-helix structure, and that's what determines its type. 

Type I is mainly found in the skin, bones and tendons. Type II is the main type in cartilage, whilst Type III is found in the blood vessels. 

Before your body can absorb collagen, it has to be broken down through a process called hydrolysis. This simply means enzymes break the large collagen molecule into much smaller collagen peptides. 

Once this happens, the original structure is gone. And because the structure has changed, so has its classification. Hydrolysed collagen is no longer technically Type I, II or III.  Instead it becomes a collection of bioactive collagen peptides that are much easier for your body to absorb and use.
